Northern Ont. police stop leads to multiple drug, traffic, weapon charges

Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 48-year-old man from Blind River following a traffic stop that led to the seizure of suspected drugs, weapons and open alcohol.

The incident occurred on Dec. 11 at about 3:45 a.m. on Longview Avenue. Officers initiated a stop of a grey four-door SUV to check the status of a temporary licence plate.

“While speaking to the driver, open alcohol could be seen inside,” said police in a news release.

Several items seized

Following a search of the vehicle, police reported locating and seizing several items – including suspected crushed Adderall pills, a crack pipe, a scale, dime baggies, open alcoholic beverages, a dagger and bear spray.

The driver was taken into custody at the scene.

Multiple charges laid

As a result, the driver faces multiple charges, including drug possession, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available, driving without a validated permit and carrying a front-seat passenger as a holder of a class G1 driver’s licence.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on Jan. 8.
