Northern impaired driver arrested after driving through stop signs

Published:

Efforts to reduce impaired driving in the northeast seem to be working in some communities – provincial police say stats are still high.

A 32-year-old man from Kasabonika Lake First Nation faces multiple charges after being arrested for impaired driving Wednesday evening.

An officer from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) on routine patrol in the community observed a pickup truck driving through stop signs without coming to a complete stop on March 5, according to a police news release.

“The officer conducted a traffic stop and approached the male driver,” said NAPS.

“During their interaction, the officer observed several signs the motorist was impaired by alcohol.”

The driver was arrested following a brief struggle with the officer.

As a result of the incident, the local man was charged with impaired driving and obstructing a peace officer.

The accused was released from police custody with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

“The names of accused individuals are withheld until charges against them have been formally sworn before the courts,” said police.

Spokespeople with the police authority are reminding the public of the dangers of impaired driving and encouraging community members to report suspicious activity.
