A snowmobile driver, 22, has been charged in a New Year's Eve crash in northern Ontario that left one with life-altering injuries.

As a result of an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigation, the driver of a snowmobile that crashed on Third Street North in Mattice, Ont., on New Year’s Eve is facing several charges.

An ambulance from Timmins and members of the James Bay OPP detachment were called to the scene of the collision around 10:30 p.m. Dec. 31, police said in a news release.

“The driver was located and transported to local hospital by ambulance,” OPP said.

Police described the snowmobiler’s injuries as “life-altering.”

On Feb. 27, OPP announced charges for the 22-year-old local driver.

The accused has been charged with failing to wear a proper helmet and driving a motor vehicle without a current validated permit in addition to two impaired driving charges – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.

In addition to the charges, the snowmobiler received a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and is scheduled to appear in court in Hearst on May 28.
