More than $100K in drugs seized in busts in northwestern Ontario

Two separate drug busts this week in northwestern Ontario led to the seizure of more than $100,000 in illegal drugs and several arrests.

Ontario Provincial Police in Thunder Bay seized $77,000 in drugs when they arrested three people at a local hotel March 25.

“The arrests were the result of an ongoing drug investigation within northwest region,” police said in a news release Friday.

Police found drugs suspected to be crystal meth, cocaine, fentanyl, hydromorphone and oxycodone pills.

Also found was a Glock .45 calibre handgun with ammunition.

Three people from Thunder Bay, ages 45, 40 and 38, face several drug trafficking, weapons and related offences.

The trio were held for bail and remanded to the Thunder Bay District Jail and Correctional Center. They are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay at a later date.

In a separate arrest, more than $27,000 in drugs was seized in Longlac by a joint investigation led by the OPP’s Greenstone community street crime unit, with assistance from Greenstone OPP uniform members, Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Marathon, and Manitouwadge’s organized crime enforcement bureau and the Nishnawbe Aski Police drug unit.

“A total of four search warrants were executed in the Longlac area resulting in the seizure of illegal substances,” police said.

“Additionally, officers seized a 2021 GMC pickup, cash and a significant amount of property believed to have been obtained by crime, with a value totaling approximately $150,000.”

As a result, a 49-year-old from Longlac was charged with multiple drug offences and property crime charges under the Criminal Code.
