Lifeguards now on duty at Sudbury's municipal beaches

With the first day of summer now in the books, public beaches in Greater Sudbury are now staffed with lifeguards.

Lifeguards began duties at the city’s municipal beaches on June 17.

Seven municipal beaches are staffed with lifeguards seven days a week.

Capreol Public Beach on Marshy Lake in the community of Capreol, Centennial Park Beach on Graham Road in the community of Whitefish and Whitewater Lake Park on Whitewater Lake in the community of Azilda are regularly staffed from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. while Bell Park Main Beach and Moonlight Beach on Ramsey Lake along with Nepahwin Beach on Nepahwin Lake and Kalmo Beach on Whitson Lake in the community of Val Caron are staffed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

City officials may extend lifeguard supervision during heat warnings.

“Bell Park has several beaches. Only the main beach is accessible and supervised by a lifeguard,” reads the city website.

“Visitors with disabilities can enjoy the water at our main beach with the use of our floating wheelchair.”

There is no fee for the use of the floating wheelchair and it is available for 1.5-hour time blocks, between 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each day. Users of the floating wheelchair must accompanied by an attendant during transfer to and from the chair and while in the water.

“Children should always be accompanied by an adult and always within arm's reach,” said city officials on their page.

Supervision of the seven municipal beaches will end on Aug. 18.
