Ice storm headed toward Sault, Sudbury and North Bay

The wintery weather is not quite over in northeastern Ontario as a storm is expected to bring more snow, ice and precipitation to the region.

Conditions are developing for a significant ice storm to hit Sudbury, Sault St. Marie and North Bay on Friday and extending until Monday.

Environment Canada said ice will accumulate from as much as 15 mm of freezing rain expected to fall.

“Ice accretion amounts in excess of 20 mm are possible over some areas,” the weather forecaster said in a special weather statement issued Wednesday.

“Local snowfall and ice pellet accumulations of 5 to 15 cm, mainly for central and northeastern Ontario. Possible utility outages. Slippery surfaces and broken tree branches from ice build-up.”

Would begin late Friday

The storm is expected to begin late Friday and extend until Monday.

“Confidence is increasing in a widespread, prolonged freezing rain event over portions of southern and northeastern Ontario,” Environment Canada said.

“The swath of maximum ice accretion is still uncertain at this point, but confidence is highest for areas of central and eastern Ontario between Parry Sound and Kingston. Warnings will be issued as the event draws nearer.”
