The smell of cannabis led to arrests at a spot check in Espanola Monday night, and the discovery of more than $30,000 in fentanyl.

Two people from Etobicoke have been charged after police in Espanola found $30,000 in drugs suspected to be fentanyl during a roadside spot check.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. Monday on Highway 6 near Foucault Drive.

Ontario Provincial Police smelled cannabis coming from a vehicle stopped at the roadside check.

“Further investigation on scene resulted in the driver and passenger being arrested,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

“Additionally, police seized an amount of suspected fentanyl with an estimated street value of $30,000, and approximately $2,500.”

Two suspects, ages 30 and 22, both from Etobicoke, have been charged with trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime. The 30-year-old was also charged with driving with cannabis readily available.

Both accused remain in custody and were scheduled to appear in bail court in Sudbury later Tuesday.
