Dozen commercial vehicles taken off road in Sault safety blitz

Transport truck crashes hit 10 year high in 2022 OPP say collisions involving transports have reached a 10-year high in the province with more than 9,000 collisions & 71 fatalities in 2022.

A coordinated effort between Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Transportation on Tuesday resulted in a dozen commercial vehicles taken off the road.

The MTO-led initiative happened at Second Line East and Black Road, Sault police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit told CTV News in an email.

"Out of 24 vehicles inspected, 12 were taken out of service, one licence plate removed, 14 provincial offence notices and seven warnings issued," Sault police said in a social media post.

The commercial motor vehicle safety blitz is "an effort to improve safety on roadways."

This comes as the number of transport truck collisions in Ontario has reached a 10-year high.

CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca has asked the OPP and MTO for comment and is awaiting a reply.
