Deb McIntosh, longtime city councillor in Sudbury, not running for re-election

Deb McIntosh, who has been city councillor in Greater Sudbury’s Ward 9 for more than a decade, has announced she won’t run for re-election in October’s municipal election.

McIntosh made the announcement in a social media post April 2.

“It is with mixed emotions that I share that I will not be seeking a fourth term in the upcoming municipal election, but I will continue to seek opportunities to serve our community in meaningful ways,” she said.

“Thank you to all the people who helped get me elected three times and who have supported me through both good and challenging times. You have been invaluable to me.”

First elected in 2014, McIntosh chaired several city committees, including the planning, audit and operations committee. Most recently, she chaired the city’s budget committee.

“It’s been such a privilege to work with the great people at city hall (staff and council), community leaders, individual residents and community groups all striving to serve our great city in big and small ways,” she said in her post.

Mayor praises her service

Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre praised McIntosh, who represented Ward 9 for the last 12 years.

“I want to extend my deep appreciation to Coun. Deb McIntosh for her dedicated service to the residents of Greater Sudbury,” Lefebvre said.

“Over the past three terms, you have been a strong advocate for your community, championing environmental and sustainability initiatives while ensuring the voices of Ward 9 were heard. Your leadership on the city’s finance committee has been especially important, helping guide thoughtful and responsible decision-making.”

“It has been a privilege to work alongside you and to see your deep commitment to your community throughout your time on council,” he added.

“I have no doubt you will continue to find ways to make a difference.”

Ontario’s municipal election will be held Oct. 26.
