Damage caused by fires in Sudbury doubled in 2025 to $15.6M

A report headed to a Sudbury committee next week says fire damage has more than doubled to $15.6 million this year from $7.2 million in 2024.

A report headed to a Sudbury committee next week says damage caused by fires in 2025 more than doubled compared to 2024, rising to $15.6 million from $7.2 million a year ago.

Leading the way was the fire at an Azilda potato farm in January that caused $2.6 million in damage, said a staff report headed to the community and emergency services committee Dec. 15. Second on the list was a July fire at a rooming house on Whittaker Street caused $1 million in damage.

While the number of fires in the city was similar – 362 up to September 2025, compared to 346 for the same time last year – damage estimates increased by almost $9 million.
