Alberta suspect charged with drugged driving in the Sault

After receiving reports of a dangerous and erratic driver, police in Sault Ste. Marie charged the driver of a vehicle on Highway 17 this week.

Reports to Ontario Provincial Police on Nov. 13 around 5:17 p.m. said someone was tailgating, driving on the shoulder, fluctuating its speed, randomly turning four-way flashers on and off and braking irregularly.

"Multiple traffic complaints from concerned road users helped police locate a driver believed to be impaired by drugs," police said in a news release Friday.

The driver was stopped on Black Road in Sault Ste. Marie.

"During their interaction with the driver, police formed grounds to believe the driver's ability to operate a vehicle was impaired," police said.

A 54-year-old from Grande Prairie, Ala., was charged with dangerous driving, impaired driving, refusing to comply with a demand and driving with cannabis readily available.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and subsequently released by the Ontario Court of Justice with a return court date of Dec. 9 in Sault Ste. Marie.

The suspect's driver's licence was suspended for 90 days the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

"The public is always encouraged to call 911 if they observe a possible impaired driver," police said.
