A significant change is coming to Mount Washington as the ski resort goes smoke-free starting this June.

The no-smoking policy includes vaping and marijuana as well as tobacco and goes into effect June 1.

It covers all areas of the resort like parking lots, ski runs and cycling and hiking trails.

The resort says the new policy will ensure that all of its guests will be able to experience the natural environment they expect when visiting.

The new policy won't only benefit health – resort staff say it will greatly reduce the risk of human-caused fires on the mountain in the hot, dry summer months.

Smoking is only currently banned in lift lines, on chairlifts and within three metres of building entrances and intakes.

The resort is also providing staff with a smoking cessation program as they'll also be affected by the policy.
