Disturbing new allegations have been made public about a Port Alberni elementary school teacher charged with making child pornography.

E.J. Dunn Grade Six teacher Daniel Oliver, 36, was arrested last week and charged on June 10.

Supt. Greg Smyth said students were sent home with a letter informing parents that Oliver, while still employed, hasn’t been at school since last Thursday, and that there is no connection between the charges and School District 70 students.

“Mr. Oliver has not returned to school at all and the conditions of his release prevent him from returning to school,” Smyth said. “For the remainder of the school year we have a replacement teacher in there for that class.”

It is alleged Oliver was speaking to a woman online who he thought was the mother of an eight-year-old girl, according to BC RCMP.

The conversation with the woman, who was actually a police officer, was extremely sexual in nature with a judge reportedly describing the allegations as “horrifying," according to local radio station 93.3 The Peak, which had a reporter in court.

Oliver was released from custody on bail after a brief court appearance Tuesday and is scheduled to make his next court appearance July 13.

He is living with his father in Port Hardy under strict conditions including no access to the internet or any electronic device, no contact with minors except for his four children, as long as it’s in accordance with terms set by the Ministry of Children and Families, no presence in places where kids would be like parks or playgrounds, as well as a daily curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

“Any case like this is concerning for us,” said BC RCMP Media Relations Officer Cpl. Janelle Shoihet. “I think the message here is we are actively pursuing those people that would be in the online chat forums.”

Parents told CTV News they were shocked to learn of the charges.

“My nephew wasn’t really concerned,” one man told CTV News.

One former student described him as a “pretty nice” teacher, and said “I gave lots of respect to him as he did the same to me.”

None of the allegations against Oliver have been proven in court.
