A Nanaimo man is the winner of the biggest online lottery jackpot in Canadian history – to the tune of $21-million.

Bill Laharty was introduced as B.C.’s newest multimillionaire Thursday after he purchased a winning Lotto 6/49 ticket in the Aug. 13 draw.

“Ever since I discovered I won, it’s like I’ve been in a dream,” he said in a statement. “I saw this big number and had to count all the zeros. I couldn’t believe it and no one else does either.”

Laharty apparently wasted no time indulging himself with his new winnings by buying a luxury car for himself, and one for his best friend of 25 years.

He said he also plans to help out family and friends, buy himself a new condo, a bigger boat and travel to exotic locales like Bora Bora.

It’s not the first time a lottery record has fallen in the harbour city.

Canada’s previous biggest online win was $7.6-million – also won by a Nanaimo resident in 2010.
