The death cap mushroom – which killed a child who consumed the fungi in Victoria last year – are sprouting up in areas on Vancouver Island.

Brenda Callan with the Canadian Forest Service says officials in Oak Bay have found over one thousand mushrooms since August – and that's only on public property.

She says the deadly mushroom tends to grow near the roots of trees, and seem more likely to grow near exotic and ornamental tree species.

Various agencies have teamed up to post warning signs about the mushrooms in areas where the death caps may grow.
