Business set on fire on Nuns’ Island

A business on Nuns’ Island, in the borough of Verdun, was the target of a suspected arson attack early Monday morning.

Montreal police (SPVM) received a 911 call at 3 a.m. about the fire on Place du Commerce.

“When the fire department arrived onsite, they were able to control the fire rapidly,” said Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson with Montreal police. “Following the extinguishing of the fire, there was some accelerant that was found on the scene.”

The business suffered “considerable damage,” he added.

“According to witnesses, at least one suspect was seen fleeing the scene on foot at the beginning of that fire,” said Brabant.

There were no reported injuries.

A security perimeter has been established to allow investigators to analyze the scene.

The file has been transferred to the Montreal police arson squad.
