Most Hydro-Quebec customers have power back after snowstorm

The number of Hydro-Quebec customers still without power was fewer than 5,000 on Thursday morning, two days after a severe weather system swept across the province.

The Crown corporation says its crews have managed to reconnect 95 per cent of the addresses affected, with most of the remaining power outages in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and Montérégie regions.

At the height of the storm on Tuesday, 395,000 Hydro-Quebec customers were in the dark as 20 centimetres of snow fell.

According to the company, places that have not yet had their power restored are “more difficult cases” in “heavily wooded and difficult-to-access” areas.

Over the last two days, 1,000 line workers were deployed to restore power.

Hydro-Quebec attributed the extent of the outages to the presence of leaves and very heavy snow.

Overall damage to the network is, in most cases, minor, it added.
