Gilbert Rozon to pay his accusers $930,000, waives his right to appeal

Just for Laughs founder Gilbert Rozon will pay his accusers $930,000 and is waiving his right to appeal a civil court judgment against him after reaching a settlement.

Rozon reached the settlement with the nine women, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the law firm Trudel Johnston & Lespérance.

The settlement comes seven weeks after a decision in a civil trial that lasted 10 months in which Quebec Superior Court Justice Chantal Tremblay ruled he sexually assaulted the women between 1980 and 2004, when Rozon was founder of the Montreal comedy festival.

The women had sued him for $14 million.

According to the settlement reached this week, he will pay the women, known as the “Courageuses,” a sum of $880,780. He will also pay the women an additional $50,000 by June 18.

Patricia Tulasne, Lyne Charlebois, Anne-Marie Charette, Annick Charette, Sophie Moreau, Danie Frenette, Guylaine Courcelles, and Martine Roy will be awarded the damages.

Both parties agreed to waive their right to appeal any judgments related to the case.

Following the allegations, Rozon stepped down from Just for Laughs in 2017 and later sold the company.
