A hiker was killed after she was struck by a falling tree on a trail north of Campbell River Tuesday, police say.

The 57-year-old woman from Williams Lake was hiking with her daughter about three kilometres in on the popular Ripple Rock trail when a tree fell and struck her, according to RCMP.

The daughter, a nurse, and another hiker who was a former military medic tried to revive her but she succumbed to her injuries.

"The Campbell River RCMP are very sorry for loss of this mother and give their deepest condolences to her family," said Campbell River RCMP spokesman Cpl. Ron Vlooswyk.

Search and rescue and Coast Guard crews arrived on scene and transported the woman's body back to Campbell River.

A police car and ambulance could be seen on the dock in Campbell River Tuesday afternoon as the Coast Guard vessel docked.

It's unclear what caused the tree to come down.

The BC Coroner's Service is now investigating the death.
