Police are warning Victoria business owners to check their bills after they busted a counterfeit money operation in a downtown parking lot last month.

Officers found a man and woman in a parking lot cutting printed counterfeit money in the 800-block of Fort Street on Nov. 27, police said Wednesday.

In all, $1,890 in fake bills were seized. Victoria police say an investigation into the operation is ongoing and they're working with the U.S. Secret Service, which routinely investigates counterfeiting.

Charges recommended against the pair include making counterfeit money and possession of counterfeit money.

Police are issuing a reminder to retailers to take extra precautions when examining bank notes during the holiday season.

The Bank Of Canada has a number of training materials on its website on how to identify fake Canadian money, while the U.S. Currency Education Program has tips on how to spot counterfeit U.S. bills.
