A 30-year-old Victoria man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a shooting at a Nanaimo hotel.

A 34-year-old man was shot and killed in the lobby of the Howard Johnson Hotel on Terminal Avenue early Wednesday morning.

Police said the shooting appeared to be targeted and wouldn’t say if the two men knew each other.

The general manager told CTV News the victim was a registered guest of the hotel.

Brandon Tyler Woody is facing one count of first-degree murder and one count of possessing a firearm while prohibited to do so.

He will remain in custody until his next court date on May 2.

A family member tells CTV News the accused is from Kelowna and is currently living in Victoria.

Mounties said it was the first homicide in Nanaimo since two men were gunned down at the Western Forest Products Mill in 2014.
