A Victoria councillor is pushing pet sales to be banned at local pet stores.

Charlayne Thornton-Joe has proposed amending the city’s animal control bylaw outlawing the sale of dogs, puppies, cats, kittens and rabbits.

She says the changes are part of recommendations put forward by the BC SPCA for municipalities to consider.

Thornton-Joe says no Victoria pet stores currently sell those animals, but the bylaw would prevent against future issues.

“Currently they don’t sell dogs or cats or rabbits, but by having a bylaw that way if other pet stores start to open they will know the policy is in place,” Thornton-Joe adds.

Animal adoptions through pet stores would not be affected.

Council will continue to discuss the motion next week.
