Two dogs are dead and three people are without a home after a fire broke out in Campbell River late Monday morning.

Crews were called to the home on Masters Road at around 11:30 a.m. They arrived to find heavy smoke and fire shooting from the rear of the building.

Firefighters knocked down the fire in an exterior attack and were eventually able to extinguish the blaze.

Two large dogs killed in the blaze were the only ones inside the home at the time.

The three people living there are without a home and in the care of Emergency Social Service as firefighters continue their investigation.

"Fire was contained to a back room in the home but smoke damage throughout, so at this point the home is uninhabitable," said Campbell River Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
