Drivers and cyclists who use Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge are in for a longer commute for the next five weeks.
On Monday, crews began a project to complete curb, gutter and sidewalk work between Wharf Street and the approach to the new bridge.
The work will affect eastbound motorists and cyclists who travel from Esquimalt and Vic West into the downtown core, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Access to the bridge is still available, but commuters are being urged to consider alternate routes to avoid delays.
The city says road work is underway not to avoid periods of peak traffic in the summer.
As for the bridge itself, the city announced last week that crews in China have started assembling critical components of the bridge including the deck, trusses and massive rings.
It will be shipped to Canada in two separate pieces, arriving in July and August.
Cars and bikes will be able to start using the bridge by the end of this year, according to the city, while the entire project is expected to wrap up by the middle of 2018.
