Mounties in the Comox Valley are searching for witnesses and a suspect after a woman was sexually assaulted at a park in Courtenay earlier this month.

In a news release, police say a 34-year-old woman contacted them on Wednesday to report a sexual assault that occurred at Sandwick Park on April 11.

She said that sometime between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m, a stranger grabbed her from behind and forced her into a forested area of the park where he sexually assaulted her.

Her attacker did not use a weapon, according to police.

The man is described as being in his late 30s or early 40s, 5'6" with a husky build, short hair, scruffy red facial hair and light skin with freckles on his arms.

The man was reportedly wearing a black jacket and possibly dark jeans.

Police say they're working to identify the man and are asking any witnesses in or around the park at the time of the assault to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
