A northern Vancouver Island highway was shut down for hours after a person was killed in a serious crash Thursday morning.

Mounties were called to Highway 19 near Port McNeill, two kilometres south of Beaver Cove Road, at around 8 a.m.

A southbound vehicle with four people inside ran into a stopped logging truck, according to police.

RCMP say the truck had slowed down to safely get around a police cruiser that had pulled over a vehicle up ahead when the car slammed into it.

One passenger died at the scene, the driver was airlifted to hospital in Vancouver in critical condition and two others suffered minor injuries.

The logging truck driver was uninjured. Police said that driver had activated the truck's hazard lights prior to it being struck from behind.

The route was closed for several hours with no detour as Mounties including traffic services and collision analysts inspected the scene.

No detour was available and police were recommending drivers check with Drive BC for any updates. It was later reopened to single-lane alternating traffic just after 12:30 p.m
