A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital after a two-vehicle crash shut down a highway in both directions just south of Courtenay Friday morning.

Police say a Jeep Cherokee was northbound on route 19A, the Old Island Highway, when it performed a sudden U-turn in front of a motorcycle.

That caused the motorcyclist to slam into the driver’s side of the vehicle, suffering injuries including a fractured femur.

The rider, said to be from Vancouver, was airlifted to hospital while the Jeep driver was uninjured.

The incident shut down the highway in both directions as crews assessed the scene, and it was expected to remain closed for several more hours.
