The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre says a 40-year-old man reported missing after his canoe was seen adrift in the Sooke Basin has been found.

Search and rescue crews had previously spend the day scouring the body of water after James Milito's canoe was found adrift without him in it.

Sooke RCMP said they were alerted at 9:50 a.m. Monday that a canoe was floating in the basin and a paddle had washed up on shore.

Investigators believed the canoe and paddle belonged to Milito, who lives on a sailboat anchored nearby.

Police searched the sailboat and found Milito's dog, but he was nowhere to be found.

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue launched an operation, but were unable to find the man, and the investigation was handed back over to Sooke RCMP.

At around 4:40 p.m., JRCC confirmed Milito had been located on dry land and that he was fine.
