The Courtenay Fire Department has narrowed down the cause of a massive blaze that burned a two-storey log home to the ground.

The fire started just after 3 a.m. on Tuesday at a home on Sackville Road in Merville.

It took 31 firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

The homeowner and his dog made it out uninjured.

Courtenay’s Deputy Fire Chief Kurt MacDonald told CTV News it was accidental and that the fire started in a water pump room.

He won’t confirm if it was electrical in nature.
