Mounties say foul play is suspected after human remains were discovered near the Malahat Highway last week.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is now investigating the discovery of the remains, found near the highway’s summit Friday.

Cpl. Tammy Douglas of Island District RCMP says an autopsy on the remains has been scheduled for later in the week.

Police have not confirmed any other details, including how long the remains may have been there and who they were discovered by.

RCMP, the BC Coroners Service and search and rescue crews could be seen parked at the Arbutus rest stop for much of the day Friday.
