Saanich police have arrested two fish farm protesters who chained up the front doors of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, locking employees inside.

Officers were called to the DFO office in the 4200-block of Commerce Circle just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to police.

When they arrived they found two women seated in front of the building's main entrance with chains locking up the doors.

Police said the women were drawing attention to the practice of open pen Atlantic salmon farming in B.C. waters and were unwilling to remove the chains.

The women agreed to peacefully turn over the key when they were arrested for mischief, and the chain was removed at around 9 a.m.

Police expect the women to be placed under conditions prohibiting them from attending the DFO office and appearing in court at a later date.

The office was the site of another rally held in December by supporters of those occupying a fish farm just off Port Hardy.
