A Vancouver Island firefighter says he considers himself lucky after dodging what could've been a head-on crash that was caught on camera.

Shane Mackay was driving east on Cedar Road toward the Nanaimo River Bridge Thursday when a van careened around the corner, crossing the middle line.

Mackay said he had to swerve out of the way to avoid getting struck and nearly drove into a ditch.

Mackay, a firefighter with North Cedar Fire Department, said it happened so fast he had to drive home and watch the video from his dashcam to figure out what really happened.

While Mackay wasn't able to record the vehicle's licence plate, he said he had a message for drivers who aren't paying enough attention to the road.

"Just that all it takes is one second of not paying attention like in the video, if it's looking at your phone or taking a sip of coffee," he said. "All it takes is one moment of distraction and it could be catastrophic."
