A dense shroud of fog descended on parts of Vancouver Island Thursday, potentially leaving drivers with near-zero visibility.

Environment Canada issued a fog advisory for eastern Vancouver Island from Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

The agency says moisture trapped under a temperature inversion has resulted in "extensive" areas of dense fog, which will become more patchy in the afternoon, especially away from the water.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution.

Harbour Air cancelled all of its routes up until 10:45 a.m. due to the fog and said it would continue to provide updates on its website.

Several morning flights were delayed or cancelled at Victoria Airport. Officials said travellers should check their flight status on the airport website or directly with their airline.

BC Ferries was running mostly on schedule, with only a couple of sailings delayed by a few minutes due to the fog.

Environment Canada also issued fog advisories for Metro Vancouver, the Southern Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast.

Air Canada waits patiently on Apron IV for the foggy conditions to improve. #yyjops
