CTV News Vancouver Island has been honoured with several awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

At a ceremony held in Vancouver over the weekend, CTV News VI won five awards for the RTDNA's B.C. and Yukon region.

They include the Bert Cannings Award for Best TV Newscast (Small/Medium Market) for an Oct. 2, 2017 newscast hosted by 6 p.m. anchor Andrew Johnson. The newscast covered the mass shooting in Las Vegas that left dozens dead and many more injured, including the son of former CTV anchor and news director Hudson Mack.

Reporter Chandler Grieve's series of stories on a life-changing Parkinson's Drug not covered by the province, which resulted in the B.C. government stepping in to help, won the Ron Laidlaw Award for Continuing Coverage.

Adam Sawatsky and videographer Wells Gaetz were presented the Dave Rogers Award for best Short Feature (Small/Medium market) for their story Biggest Little Fan, featuring a young boy who has overcome many obstacles to become the number one fan of Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara.

Jordan Cunningham's story The Long Shots, featuring the young Saanich Braves hockey team trying to earn a spot in a national game in Ottawa, picked up the Sports Feature Reporting Award.

CTV's website also earned a Digital Media Award (Small/Medium Market) for its web coverage of the 2017 B.C. Election.

The winners of the regional awards will move on to compete for the national RTDNA awards in Toronto next month.
