A prison near Metchosin says plans to lower fences on its grounds have been put on hold amid a federal review of the project.

A spokesman for William Head Institution says the commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada requested the review into the plan to lower the prison's security fences from 12 feet tall to four feet.

The project ruffled the feathers of local politicians like Metchosin Mayor John Ranns, who said he wasn't consulted and was notified about the change through the media.

"Consultation is being done with the Mayor and there will be formal community consultation prior to any final decision," CSC said in a statement. "At this point in time there is no decision to proceed with what was reported in the media."

Ranns said he was reserving judgment on the plan until he met with the prison's warden Thursday.

William Head Institution is a minimum-security prison and said the lowering of fences would be in line with similar facilities in Canada.
