A 36-year-old man who was found dead inside a Duncan apartment building on Saturday is being remembered as a caring person.

Police were called to the Gala Vista on Government Avenue after a man's body was found in the third floor hallway around 6:30 a.m.

Tenants tell CTV News police have been on scene all weekend and investigators were back on Monday digging through dumpsters outside.

Mounties identified the man as Ryan Hendrick Young.

His family tells CTV News their “hearts are broken” and they don’t know what led to Young’s passing.

“Our family is grieving, and Ryan was loved. Ryan was a gentle giant, willing to literally give the shirt off his back,” a statement reads.

According to the family, Young didn’t live in the Duncan building where he was found.

The family says a memorial service will be held this summer to “honour Ryan and his laughter.”

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, North Cowichan/Duncan General Investigations Unit and the Forensics Identification Section are actively investigating Young’s death.

The circumstances surrounding his death are believed to be suspicious, officials say.

“Our priority now is to try to piece together the day and hours leading up to Mr. Young' death,” said Sgt. John Ferguson. “We are looking to speak with anyone who may have seen, spoken to, or have information about Mr. Young's whereabouts from the morning of June 9th, up to and including the morning of June 10th."

Anyone with information is asked to contact VIIMCU at 250-380-6211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
