A 35-year-old man has died following an RCMP-involved shooting in Qualicum Beach that is now being investigated by B.C.'s police watchdog.

Mounties said in a news release that the incident began unfolding just after 6 a.m. Thursday morning in the 39000-block of Inland Island Highway.

RCMP officers were called to assist paramedics for a report of a man who had stabbed himself inside of a vehicle on the highway.

Officers were also notified by 911 callers that the man was running down the highway and someone was trying to restrain him.

The IIO said once Mounties caught up to the man, a struggle ensued that ended with two officers being injured and the man being shot by police.

Paramedics provided medical assistance but the man has since died from his injuries, the agency said. It is unclear whether the man died from injuries related to being shot or from stabbing himself.

The two injured officers were transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The incident automatically triggered an investigation by the IIO, which probes all police-involved incidents that result in death or serious harm.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
