A man repeatedly stabbed in a Port Alberni McDonald’s is recovering in hospital while his attacker has been arrested, officials say.

The incident happened at the Johnston Road McDonald’s around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A 51-year-old Port Alberni man was attacked inside the restaurant, police say.

He was transported to West Coast General Hospital and was later airlifted to Victoria General Hospital, where he remained in serious but stable condition Wednesday.

The attacker fled on foot and was arrested by police around 9:30 a.m. after an extensive search.

On Wednesday, Steven David Kaspers, 25, appeared in a Port Alberni courtroom on charges of attempt to commit murder and aggravated assault.

“We are still in the early stages of our investigation,” said Cpl. Amelia Hayden with Port Alberni RCMP. “At this time we do not know the motive for the attack or if the two men knew each other.”

Anyone with information on the stabbing is asked to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
