Investigators have confirmed that a dead body was found at a Victoria school Tuesday afternoon following a report of a sudden death.

Victoria police tweeted Tuesday just after 5:30 p.m. that they were responding to a report of a deceased person at S.J. Willis school.

Investigators were on scene through the evening and part of the school grounds, near Topaz Park, remained behind police tape Wednesday afternoon.

It was unclear whether or not a body was actually found until the Vancouver Island Major Crime Unit confirmed it late Wednesday afternoon.

VIIMCU, which investigates homicides and missing persons cases where foul play is suspected, said the incident was reported as a sudden death.

It is now being investigated as suspicious by VIIMCU, Victoria police major crime detectives, forensic analysts and a crowd management search unit team.

The BC Coroners Service also confirmed it was aware of the death and is working to help determine the identity and cause of death of the deceased person.

The Greater Victoria School District said it was aware of the active investigation and that fortunately, no students were impacted.
