Woman charged after trying to avoid RIDE checkpoint: Aylmer police

Aylmer police officers say they charged a 58-year-old driver attempting to avoid Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checkpoint.

Officers were conducting a RIDE program around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Police say a vehicle attempted to avoid the RIDE, but was stopped by alert officers. As a result, a 58-year-old Port Colborne woman failed the roadside breath test and was arrested.

Officers say tests at the station confirmed she was impaired and she has subsequently been charged with over 80.

An unrelated second impaired driving arrest came just after 5 a.m., after an off-duty Aylmer officer travelling into work observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on John St North.

Officers quickly located the vehicle, which police say was travelling at 107km/hr in a posted 50km/hr zone and conducted a stop. The driver failed a roadside screening test and was arrested.

As a result, a 44-year-old Aylmer man had been charged with over 80 and stunt driving -excessive speed.

Police continue to encourage the public to contact 911 to report any possible impaired drivers.
