Warm, windy start gives way to unsettled stretch in London, Ont.

Julie Atchison has the latest forecast for southwestern Ontario

Southern Ontario is starting the week off with warm temperatures and sunshine, but a shift in conditions is expected later Monday as a cold front moves into the region.

Meteorologist Julie Atchison says temperatures Monday afternoon are climbing into the upper teens and low 20s under mostly sunny skies.

“A beautiful start to the week,” Atchison said, noting that much of Midwestern Ontario is seeing highs ranging from 17 to 19 C.

The pleasant conditions are expected to give way to unsettled weather later in the day, as a cold front brings increasing cloud cover along with showers and the risk of thunderstorms.

“We have a cold front that will push into the area tonight with some showers and the chance for thunderstorms late this evening,” Atchison said.

Rain is expected to persist overnight, with temperatures remaining relatively mild across most of southern Ontario. Overnight lows will stay in the double digits for many areas, though cooler conditions are expected farther north, where temperatures could dip to between 8 and 9 C.

Atchison says scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible into the evening, followed by continued chances of rain overnight as the system tracks through the region.

Behind the front, winds will shift to the northwest, ushering in cooler, below-seasonal temperatures for Tuesday and the remainder of the workweek.

“It would be nice to string a couple more sunny days together, but the forecast will feature cool, below-normal temperatures moving through the rest of the week,” she said.

Conditions on Tuesday are expected to remain unsettled, though there may be a brief break in precipitation early in the day.

“There will be a bit of a lull on Tuesday morning,” Atchison said, before showers redevelop in the afternoon and evening.

Tuesday: Mainly cloudy. 60 per cent chance of showers in the morning. Showers beginning near noon. Wind southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming northwest 20 in the morning. High 15.

Wednesday: Cloudy with 40 per cent chance of showers. High 11.

Thursday: Sunny. High 13.

Friday: Cloudy with 60 per cent chance of showers. High 10.

Saturday: A mix of sun and cloud with 40 per cent chance of showers. High 12.
