After deliberating for about seven hours, a London jury has found 43-year-old Barbara Cabala guilty of manslaughter in the strangulation death of her mother Elzbieta.
Cabala stood next to her lawyer showing little or no emotion as the jury delivered its verdict Friday afternoon.
This follows a three-week long trial with the court hearing evidence surrounding the turbulent relationship the accused had with her 59-year-old mother.
The jury heard evidence that Cabala, who was an only child, had moved back in with her mother, who didn’t always agree with her daughter’s lifestyle choices.
On July 7, 2021, the verbal arguing boiled over into a physical altercation at the townhouse the mother and daughter shared at 392 Wilkins St. in south London.
When London police arrived to the home following a 911 call from the accused, the mother was found unconscious on the floor.
Elzbieta would later be pronounced dead and an autopsy would reveal that she died from external neck compression or strangulation.
She also suffered more than 55 injuries, which included cuts and bruises.
In court, Barbara Cabala would claim that she was acting in self-defence after being attacked, but the jury sided with the Crown’s evidence that the accused was the aggressor in this case and that she simply lost it and snapped on the night in question choking her mother.
Cabala remains free on bail until her sentencing hearing, which has been scheduled for June 26.
