East London house fire that killed dog under investigation

A house fire in east London is not deemed suspicious, but the extent of damage to the interior has triggered an investigation.

Around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, residents of 21 Caprice Cres. returned home to find the interior filled with thick smoke.

“They called the fire department and upon arrival fire crews [saw] smoke and flames exiting out the side windows, and the kitchen area was fully involved,” explained Platoon Chief Jamie Britton of the London Fire Department.

According to Britton, the fire appears to have started in the kitchen, but was not cooking-related.

No one was injured in the house fire.

Firefighters performed CPR on a dog discovered inside the home, but it did not survive.

Damage to the house is estimated at $250,000.

“It doesn’t seem to be suspicious at all,” added Britton. “We’ve called our fire investigators in just simply because it exceeded the $200,000 landmark for calling investigators.”
