Guelph to receive more than $15M in federal transit funding over next decade

The City of Guelph will receive more than $15.7 million in federal public transit funding over the next decade.

Under the Canada Public Transit Fund’s Baseline Funding stream, Guelph will receive $1,573,391 annually for the next 10 years.

City officials said the funding will be used to install electric bus charging infrastructure, refurbish existing diesel buses to extend their lifespan and add more electric buses to Guelph Transit’s fleet.

“This funding will provide a stable revenue stream over the next decade for Guelph Transit to be able to invest in projects that will contribute to improving not only rider experience, but also support accommodating new housing and job growth, as well as our climate and energy targets,” said Tara Baker, the city’s chief administrative officer, in a media release.

Mayor Cam Guthrie said the investment will help the city continue expanding transit services while maintaining affordability.

“This funding is great news as the city continues to purchase more buses to keep our residents moving,” Guthrie said.

The funding builds on previous federal investments in electric buses and a new transit garage in Guelph.
