Guelph police say they seized a man’s Tesla indefinitely after they caught him driving while suspended, twice in one day.
Police were patrolling near Gordon Street and Wellington Street, when the police cruiser’s automated license plate reader alerted them to a vehicle owned by a suspended driver.
It was pulled over in a parking lot with the owner in the driver’s seat. Police said the vehicle was also not registered or insured.
A 27-year old Guelph man was charged with driving while suspended, driving without insurance and driving a vehicle without a valid permit.
The officer asked the man if he wanted a tow truck called to move his car from the parking lot, but he claimed he would make the arrangements himself.
“A short time later, while the officer was completing his paperwork nearby, he saw the Tesla driving out of the parking lot onto Wellington Street West,” said a media release.
It was pulled over again and the same man was issued three more tickets for the same offences.
“This time he was not given an option,” police said.
Police seized the car “to prevent continuation of the offences.”
Police said it would be impounded until the charges are concluded or the owner is able to convince a court to release it.
