Four units of an eight-unit townhouse block in Kitchener were damaged in a fire Friday evening, displacing residents and causing an estimated $500,000 to $750,000 in damage. Kitchener Fire crews responded to the structure fire on Activa Avenue at 8:23 p.m. Upon arrival, crews found fire affecting four units, with flames extending into the attic spaces. A primary search of the building has been completed, and no injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. Fire crews remained on scene to monitor for hot spots, conduct overhaul operations and secure the property. The fire caused structural damage to the roofs of the four affected units. Hydro meters were being removed as a precaution, and residents of the affected units will be displaced. The Ontario Fire Marshal will be notified, and Kitchener Fire’s investigation team is expected to attend the scene Saturday morning to begin determining the cause. The fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
