The City of Kitchener is expanding its upcoming indoor recreation complex with a state-of-the-art 33,800-square-foot gymnasium.

The project is backed by $2 million in federal funding from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Fund.

The facility will feature four multipurpose courts with 40-foot ceilings and competition-level flooring. Beyond serving local residents, city officials believe the gym will position Kitchener as a hub for provincial and national tournaments, boosting the local economy.

“The addition of a gymnasium to the Kitchener indoor recreation complex solidifies its status as a game-changer for our city...it also positions Kitchener as a top destination for competitive sports, helping to attract major events that will energize our city and support local businesses,” a statement from Mayor Berry Vrbanovic read in part.

With this latest funding, the federal government’s total investment in the recreation complex reaches $11.7 million, including a previous $9.7 million contribution from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

The new complex is expected to open in summer 2026.
