Impaired driver hits police cruiser while trying to flee

A 31-year-old man is facing several charges after the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) said he reversed into a cruiser while trying to avoid being arrested.

WRPS said officers were called to a parking lot near Ottawa Street North and Weber Street East at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

When police arrived, they said they found a man slumped over in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle with open alcohol containers.

Police said the man tried to drive off, reversing into a police cruiser and driving over a curb before he was arrested.

No one was injured in the incident.

The 31-year-old is facing impaired driving charges, along with dangerous operation, assault with a weapon and assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist. He is also charged with multiple Highway Traffic Act and Liquor Licence and Control Act offences.

The man was held in custody for a bail hearing.
