Guelph Police say a house fire that killed one person and sent another to hospital Wednesday is not considered suspicious.
First responders were called to a townhome on Sunset Road, near Willow Road and Applewood Crescent, just before 7 a.m.
Four people were inside at the time.
“The two [people] upstairs were alerted to the smoke,” Scott Tracey, the media relations coordinator for Guelph Police, told CTV News on Wednesday. “They tried to get the two tenants out of the basement and were unsuccessful in doing so.”
He said the two upstairs escaped through a second-floor window.
Firefighters then rescued a 40-year-old woman from the main floor, and she was transported to a Hamilton hospital with serious injuries.
A 41-year-old man who was in the basement was pronounced dead at the scene.
A dog was also taken to the Guelph Humane Society for assessment.
The Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM) was called in to assist Guelph Fire and Guelph Police with the investigation.
In an email to CTV News just before 3:45 p.m., the OFM said investigators determined there were working smoke alarms on the main floor and second level of the home, however they could not confirm if there any were in the basement.
Wednesday’s incident was the first fatality in the city this year.
