Four youths seriously injured in single-vehicle crash in North Dumfries

Four teens were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a single-vehicle collision in North Dumfries.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) said the crash happened around 12:35 a.m. on Clyde Road near Clydebank Drive. They said the driver, a 15-year-old girl from Cambridge, lost control of the vehicle and hit a hydro pole.

The driver, two male passengers and one female passenger were taken to hospital with serious injuries. All four people are under the age of 16.

“We’re looking at all aspects of the investigation,” said WRPS Staff Sgt. Scott Griffiths. “From the cause, all the way to what’s happened at the scene there.”

Griffiths said the investigation will look at factors like speed and possible impairment. At this point, it’s not clear how the teens got a hold of the car.

“The ages that we’re talking about, no party would be licensed to drive,” he said.

In a post to social media around 6:30 a.m. Monday, the Waterloo Regional Police Service said Clyde Road was closed between Village Road and Clydebank Drive.

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board said administrators have been in contact with the families involved as two people connected to their school community were passengers in the vehicle.

“We recognize this has been a difficult morning for many in our community,” said a statement from the school board. “Although the circumstances are not critical, our school staff and on-site social workers are ensuring care and support are in place for anyone affected. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this morning’s incident.”

Police said no charges have been laid yet.

“On the ability to drive side, we look at not having a licence as an offense,” said Griffiths. “Certainly, when you’re endangering other members of the public or endangering people in your vehicle by your driving behaviour, those are certainly Criminal Code aspects.”

The roadway was closed for several hours for investigation and hydro repairs.

According to GrandBridge Energy, about 58 customers are affected by the power outage and restoration expected around 2 p.m.

Police asked drivers to avoid the area and find alternate routes while crews worked to restore power and clear the scene. They are also appealing to witnesses who may have information or dashcam footage of the crash.
